Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mecasonic13 - 16-05-2013

I think it might be better to keep them in a single thread, since sales thread typically don't produce a lot of discussion... And maybe I will find a way to motivate myself to keep posting them every week.

Overall a standard performance for the new Dengeki Bunko releases (Toaru Majutsu no Index: New Testament, Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon, Hitotsu no Tairiki no Monogatari, Nareru SE, goshujin-sama wa Yamaneko-hime, boku to Kanojo no Game Sensou, Yagate Maken no Alicebell) which sold this week roughly as much copies as the previous volumes did on their first week; besides that, we get to see Hataraku Maou-sama! and Oregairu thanks to their anime adaptation, as well as Hiro Arikawa's Toshokan Sensou and Kenchou Omote Nashi Ka due to their LA movie adaptation. The rest of the rankings are a few high-selling novels (Hidan no Aria, SAO and IS) slowly drifting out of the rankings, Biblia ranking because it's Biblia (and the cut-off line was low this week) and Shokubutsu Zukan for reasons that I ignore (maybe it's just getting a boost due to other Arikawa's works getting more popular with the movies?).

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mark - 22-05-2013

I saw you get this data from 2ch, do you need to know japanese to get it? I usually get the ranking from MAL forum but they take forever to post it. E.G: this rank you posted 4 days ago will only be posted on MAL(myanimelist) today at night or tomorrow.

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mecasonic13 - 22-05-2013

I would say that you don't need to know japanese to get the rankings themselves, as long as you are linked to the right thread. However you will need some of it if you want to know which novels are ranking since the titles will be in japanese.

I normally get the rankings from the light novels sales thread on 2ch (which I won't link to since it has already over 900 posts and will soon be closed) but you can also get them from the light novel label comparison thread.

Once you're there, you just need to look for lines that look like this:
オリコン 2013年5月6日~2013年5月12日 文庫(2013年5月20日付)
オリコン 2013年5月6日~2013年5月12日 BOOK(総合)(2013年5月20日付)
オリコン 2013年5月6日~2013年5月12日 コミック(2013年5月20日付)

Those lines are the headers for the weekly Top 50 rankings in 文庫 (Bunko, a pocket format and the main format in which light novels are released), コミック (Manga, note that only adaptations of light novels and/or manga written by light novels authors will be included in the threads I mentionned) and BOOK(総合) (basically everything else).

The rankings themselves will be like this:
27位 11位 *5回 **9,352部 291,779部 13/04/10 **33日 ソードアート・オンライン 12 アリシゼーション・ライジング

It's pretty straight-forward and not much different than the rankigns you're used to see, but I will explain what everything means anyway just to be sure:
  • 27位 is the ranking of the novel this week.
  • 11位 is the ranking of the novel last week. It's written as (**位) if the novel didn't rank last week.
  • *5回 is the number of times the novel ranked (i.e. if that number is lower than the number of weeks since release, then that means there were weeks where the novel didn't sell high enough to rank which means that the sales reported by Oricon are lower than the actual sales)
  • **9,352部 is the amount of copies sold this week.
  • 291,779部 is the cumulative sales.
  • 13/04/10 is the date of release (which may or may not coincide with the official release date).
  • **33日 is the amount of days since release (so it's mostly redundant witht the number of weeks and the date, but it's relatively important during the first two weeks after release where a difference of one day can make a significant difference in sales).
  • ソードアート・オンライン 12 アリシゼーション・ライジング is the title of the novel. (In this case, SAO volume 12).

If the thread reaches 1000 posts and gets closed, you can find the next thread by going to the 2ch LN board and doing a Ctrl+F to search the name of the thread (so for the light novel label comparison thread, you would search for ラノベレーベル比較スレ).

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mark - 22-05-2013

Thank you very much for the explanation. As i said i usually get this data from MAL( http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=603631 ) but they are taking forever to do it in the last months. I'll probably start to get it from here from now on since you post it earlier than people from MAL. I asked "how" you get the data so i can "try" to get it by myself in case you stop post it every week.

I use this data to make posts about the weekly light novel ranking. I usually make some comments about the sells(are doing good or not, get worse or better than the previous volumes, the anime adaptation is giving X LN a boost in sells, ect).

http://intoxianime.blogspot.com.br/2013/05/ranking-de-vendas-de-light-novel-abril_14.html , is in portuguese though so i don't think will be useful or interesting for you hehe.

PS: Sorry about my english, i can read just fine but i am kinda bad with writing.

This week had two GA Bunko releases ranking: Dungeon is once again selling better than the previous volumes, although this time with the help of a limited edition volume; Uchi no Isourou is doing decently I guess. Besides that, we have some Fujimi Fantasia Bunko novels (Date A Live, KoreZon) who managed to rank despite that they are officially released on the 20th (which is why Highschool DxD vol. 15, ItsuTen vol. 12 and a few other aren't in the ranking). Same with the Ichijinsha Bunko release (Shomin Sample). There are also a few B-Log's Bunko and Tiara Bunko novels, but I don't really know how many copies they usually sell so I can't really comment on their performance.
Otherwise, the rankings are still being dominated by the sales of Hiro Arikawa's novels, Hataraku Maou-sama! and Hamachi.
Concerning the novels that were released last week, it seems that Index is selling just as well as the previous volume, which is an improvement since recently there was a drop in sales after each volume. Horizon and Hitotsu no Tairiki are still doing well, and SAO is slowly drifting out of the rankings.

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mark - 24-05-2013

If i remember correctly Index already sold 200k+ per volume in the past, vol 6(previous volume) didn't even got 170k, that's quite a fall.
Kore wa Zombie is selling pretty bad for a LN which had an anime adaptation.
Sixth week of Hataraku with 4 novels on the ranking, nice, i didn't read the novels but the anime is so funny, i am happy it's giving a good boost to the novels.
Oragairu wasn't able to keep 4 novels in the ranking for more than 1 week, the boost in the novels was quite small compared to Hataraku.

"Data a Live encore", i wonder what is this.

What's this "Dungeon" Light Novel about?

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mecasonic13 - 24-05-2013

As I said, Fujimi Fantasia Bunko novels like Kore wa Zombie or Date A Live are officially released on the 20th. So for this week, most of their sales are from online retailers sending the novels ahead in time to their customers and bookstores that are breaking the street date. It's very likely that they will sell more copies next week than they have this one.

Date A Live Encore is a collection of short stories (as a rule of thumb, if you see an unnumbered volume in a series where volumes are usually numbered, there are good chances that it's a collection of short stories or a side story. Unless its name implies that it's the last volume, of course).

The "Dungeon" light novel is a fantasy adventure story. The setting reminds me a lot of Etrian Odyssey and other rogue-like and/or dungeon crawler videogames since it's literally about a boy exploring a giant underground dungeon below a city (and meeting girls on the way). It was originally a web novel like SAO, Mahouka, Maoyuu, etc. which is why the third volume is already released even though it just started getting published this year. It's been getting more and more popular with each volume (vol. 1 sold 12k in 10 days, vol. 2 sold the same amount in only 5 days and vol. 3 just sold 19.5k in 4 days).

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mark - 25-05-2013

I see, this explains the low sales of "Kore wa Zombie" and "Date a Live", i need to pay more attention to the release dates XD.

So "Dungeon" was a webnovel, well, things are starting to make more sense now, i was kinda "o.O" with 3 "Dungeon" LNs being published in just 5 months. SAOs author is a bit insane too, he published 6 Light Novels last year( 3 SAO LN + 2 Accel LN + 1 SAO Progressive LN), most authors only publish 2 or 3 LNs per year.

48 **6,040 173,881 2012/07/27 Sora Tobu Kouhoushitsu

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka and Date A Live (as well as ItsuTen and Taimadou Gakuen35, which both managed to rank this week) did get better sales this week compared to last one, although their sales are worse than the previous volumes. In Date A Live's case, it can be explained by it being a collection of short stories, which typically don't sell as well as standard volumes. We get another example of this with Koyomimonogatari which also sold less than Koimonogatari and Tsukimonogatari did.

Besides that, we have a "new" volume of IS ranking, doing as well as the previous rereleases. No other light novels from Overlap Bunko managed to rank though. Another novel missing (but this time from Fujimi Fantasia Bunko) is Yuusha ni Narenakatta (...) which has an anime announced but is still unable to have a volume ranking.

I'm surprised Shomin Sample is still in the rankings, I think that's the first time a Ichijinsha Bunko novel managed to stay in the weekly rankings for two weekrs.

There is also a bunch of MF Bunko J and Super Dash Bunko light novels (Campione, Asterisk, Machine Doll, Tsuki Tsuki, Koakuma Teeri, Hrasvelgr Exceed) which are doing roughly as good as the previous volumes.

And there are also the usual Hiro Arikawa novels, which will probably not leave anytime soon...

Oh, and I guess Maou-sama and Oregairu still managed to rank somehow.

RE: Weekly Light Novels Oricon Rankings - Mark - 31-05-2013

Monogatari are "Novels"(Books) like Biblia? Always thought it was a "Light novel"
