The 39-year-old Timonen will return for his eighth
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 09-09-2019, 01:15 PM - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenceman Kimmo Timonen to a one-year contract extension. The 39-year-old Timonen will return for his eighth season with the Flyers. He was acquired in 2007 from the Nashville Predators along with Scott Hartnell in exchange for Nashvilles first-round pick in the 2007 Entry Draft. In seven seasons with the Flyers, Timonen has won five Barry Ashbee trophies as the teams best defenceman, including the last three. He ranked second in team history behind Eric Desjardins, who won the award seven times. He has also made two of his five Olympic appearances with Finland during his time as a Flyer, winning bronze in both 2010 and 2014. He was recognized for his 1,000th career NHL game in March 2013. Timonen had six goals and 32 points in 77 games for the Flyers this season. He has 38 goals and 270 points with the Flyers. Nolan Ryan Jersey . The Seahawks announced Rices decision two days before the start of training camp. The news was first reported by Pro Football Talk. Rice played seven seasons and is retiring at age 27. "I have enjoyed my experiences with all of my coaches, teammates and passionate Seahawks fans. I take great pride in knowing I was one of the players signed to help build the foundation of the team that ultimately won the Super Bowl," Rice said in a statement from the team. "Ill be joining the 12s in support of the Seattle Seahawks as they take on the challenge to repeat." Rice missed half of last season with the Seahawks after tearing his ACL against St. Louis. Rice re-signed with Seattle in the off-season on a $1 million, one-year deal. But he was going to be pushed to make the Seahawks final roster with the additions of draft picks Paul Richardson and Kevin Norwood and a healthy Percy Harvin. "The entire organization would like to thank Sidney for his leadership over the past three seasons," Seattle general manager John Schneider said. "His time as a Seahawks player displayed the core values that Pete and I aimed to bring to the program." Rice signed with Seattle as a free aggent before the 2011 season.dddddddddddd He played in 33 regular-season games with the Seahawks, his best season coming in 2012 when he had 50 receptions and seven touchdowns and played all 16 games. Rices best season came in 2009 when he was selected to the Pro Bowl after catching 83 passes for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns. He added another 10 catches and four touchdowns in the playoffs that season. But injuries were always part of the story with Rice. His breakout season with Minnesota in 2009 was followed by hip surgery that limited him to six games in 2010, his final season with the Vikings. His first season with Seattle was shortened by a pair of concussions that eventually landed Rice on injured reserve. Rice started six of Seattles first eight games last season before injuring his knee against the Rams. Rice was a second-round pick of the Vikings in 2007. Hell finish his career with 243 catches and 30 touchdowns. Wide receiver is one position where the Seahawks could afford to absorb a loss. Golden Tate left for Detroit in free agency in the off-season, but Seattle was not counting on Rice to be a starter with Harvin, Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse and Ricardo Lockette all returning off the Super Bowl roster. Rice recently invested in Wingstop franchises in the Puget Sound region and said he intends on establishing himself as a businessman. ' ' '

Kings have signed first-round pick Nik Stauskas
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 09-09-2019, 01:10 PM - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento Kings have signed first-round pick Nik Stauskas to his rookie contract. Kings general manager Pete DAlessandro made the announcement late Tuesday night. Sacramento selected the Etobicoke, Ont. native out of Michigan with the eighth overall pick in Junes draft. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 6-foot-6 Stauskas averaged 17.5 points last season on the way to winning Big Ten player of the year honours. He shot 44 per cent from 3-point range in two years in college and improved his ball handling and defence considerably in his second season after taking over a major share of the playmaking role with the departure of point guard Trey Burke to the NBA. Kansas City Chiefs Jerseys . "I honestly dont know," he said. Try this: 20 points, nine assists and seven rebounds by Rajon Rondo, a 62-37 rebounding advantage by the Celtics and a horrible 4-for-30 shooting performance on 3-pointers by the Nets. Pittsburgh halted a two-game slide with Saturdays 3-0 win in Nashville and followed by slamming the New Jersey Devils in the opener of a three-game homestand on Tuesday. The Penguins trailed the Devils 3-1 in the early stages of the second period, but ended the contest with seven unanswered goals to earn an 8-3 blowout victory. Craig Adams goal in the second period put the Penguins ahead for good, while Sidney Crosby scored twice in the resounding victory. Pascal Dupuis, Blake Comeau, Steve Downie and Patric Hornqvist each posted a goal and an assist for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 16 shots in the win. Thats what great teams do, said Dupuis. They get their top guys out that are chipping in night in and night out and you have the guys that are coming up big any given night. Thats how you win games. Thats how you win championships. Crosby enters Thursday second in the league with 14 points and is trailing Tyler Seguin of Dallas by one point. Tyler Toffoli of the Kings is just one behind Crosby with 13 points off five goals and eight assists. Crosby has one goal and six helpers in five career games against the Kings, while Fleury is 4-2-0 with a 2.26 goals against average in his career versus L.A. The Kings are hoping to rebound tonight after having a six-game winning streak snapped in controversial fashion Tuesday in Philadelphia. After a video review, former Kings forward Brayden Schenn was awarded the game-winner with 2:24 remaining in overtime. Schenn skated in all alone from the hosts side of center ice in the neutral zone and shot low, but while Kings netminder Jonathan Quick smothered the shot with his pads, the puck was loose for a second.dddddddddddd Schenn made a hard stop in the crease and the force of covering the rebound pushed Quick into the net with the puck presumably over the goal line. The original call did not indicate a goal, but upon a conference of all four officials plus a brief review, the on-ice decision was overruled, giving the Flyers the 2-1 victory. I dont know the exact ruling on that because they seem to change it every year, Quick said following the loss. But usually youre not allowed to push the goalie into the net, so I dont know. Maybe they changed it again on us. Toffoli and former Flyers captain Mike Richards scored for the Kings, with Quick making 40 saves in the setback. The Kings played Tuesdays game with just 11 forwards, but they hope centerman Anze Kopitar (upper body) can play tonight after sitting out against the Flyers. Fellow forward Trevor Lewis also is questionable with an upper-body injury, while winger Marian Gaborik is doubtful with an upper-body issue of his own. L.A. will aim for its first road win tonight when it plays the second test of a five-game trek. The Kings are 0-0-2 as the visiting team this season, while posting a 6-1-0 record at home. Pittsburgh has won six of the last eight meetings versus the Kings. L.A. did halt a three-game road skid in this series with a 3-2 win at Consol Energy Center on March 27. With the Kings also playing tomorrow night in Detroit, Martin Jones could get his second start of the season in on of the next two games. ' ' '

Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants walked into a stadium filled with rally towels and threw a wet blanket on the whole thing. Its what they do in October. Madison Bumgarner threw a four-hit shutout, Brandon Crawford hit the fourth playoff grand slam in team history and the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-0 in the National League wild-card game Wednesday night. The Giants have won seven straight playoff elimination games, including five on the road. They will face the NL East-champion Nationals in a division series with Game 1 scheduled for Friday in Washington. Bumgarner (1-0) struck out 10 and Crawford homered with no outs in the fourth inning off Edinson Volquez (0-1), casting a pall over the PNC Park-record crowd of 40,629 that lasted for much of the rest of the game. The blowout had none of the drama of Tuesdays AL wild-card game between Kansas City and Oakland, an instant-classic thriller the Royals won in the bottom of the 12th inning. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a source said Crosby was to have arthroscopic surgery to repair damage to his wrist. However, Rutherford said while surgery is a possibility, no decision has been made as of yet. "Sidney Crosby has been undergoing treatment on a right wrist injury that he suffered during the season," said Rutherford on the tteams Twitter account.dddddddddddd "Sid is getting medical advice to determine the best path moving forward, including the possibility of arthroscopic surgery. No final decision has been made on surgery at this point. We expect to have a decision by early next week." Crosby scored one goal and added eight assists in 13 playoff games with the Penguins, who were eliminated in the second round by the New York Rangers.   pleted a three-game sweep of the Bosto
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 09-09-2019, 01:04 PM - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

ST. LOUIS -- Francisco Liriano wasnt feeling well. First came a nosebleed, then the Pirates pitcher felt dizzy at the plate before flying out to end the second inning. Liriano was getting hooked up to an IV to deal with flu-like symptoms when the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen stepped up big-time in a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday that snapped a four-game losing streak. Waiting to be taken out in the third inning, the lefty was bent over, hands on his knees. "I just feel dizzy, weak and dizzy," Liriano said after the game. "I dont know. I just feel sick." Gaby Sanchez had two RBIs in a four-run fourth inning and five relievers combined to work seven strong innings, with key outs from rookie Stolmy Pimentel and Jared Hughes against Yadier Molina. "Pimentel pitched as big an inning as weve had pitched for us all year in the third," manager Clint Hurdle said. "You had 40-plus on their feet, a 3-2 count on Molina, on jersey day. "To get the swing and miss and then carry it deeper, a big-time push from Stolmy." Matt Holliday had an RBI double for the Cardinals, who have mustered five runs in their last six games. They got three hits and a run after Liriano left and got beat by an over-shifted defence, too, when Matt Adams lined out to shortstop Jordy Mercer stationed right behind the second-base bag with a man on third in the seventh. "Were just not clicking," said leadoff man Matt Carpenter, who was 0 for 3 with two walks. "Were having good at-bats, guys are competing, but stuff just isnt falling in for us. "Its just the way its going right now." Molina was a bust on his jersey giveaway day, striking out with the bases loaded to end the third against Pimentel (2-0) and popping out with runners on second and third to end the fifth against Hughes. He entered batting .431 during a 15-game hitting streak. Andrew McCutchen and Jose Tabata each added an RBI off Tyler Lyons (0-2) in the fourth, with the first four runners reaching safely after the lefty opened with three perfect innings. Tabata totalled three hits and is a career .345 hitter at Busch Stadium. "He continues to find a way to find hits in this ballpark," Hurdle said. "Hes really been a solid offensive ballplayer for us here." The Pirates have scored seven runs while Liriano was in the game in his six starts. They jumped into gear the inning after the lefty was taken out en route to just their third win in their last 10 games. "That one inning obviously changes the whole day," Lyons said. "The one inning, thats a killer." Hurdle said there were no health concerns at the start of the game and noted, "the first two innings were pretty crisp and clean." "It just snowballed on him," the manager added. Pittsburgh also has struggled offensively, totalling four runs during its losing streak, and got shut out 1-0 in the series opener Friday. "We got some key hits that we havent been getting," Gaby Sanchez said. "We were finally able to put something together and get some runs across. It was good to get the lead and stay ahead." Liriano walked Lyons to start the third and was behind 3-0 against leadoff man Matt Carpenter before meeting with a trainer on the mound, and then departing. Tony Sanchez added a two-run single in the ninth off Eric Fornatoro after striking out his first three at-bats. NOTES: Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright (4-1, 1.46) is set to work the finale against Edinson Volquez (1-1, 1.93) after tweaking his right knee in his last start. ... Adams made an outstanding diving catch at 1B to rob Pimentel of an opposite-field line drive hit in the fifth. ... Jhonny Peralta hit his 300th career double off Justin Wilson in the seventh. ... Watch the game live on TSN2 and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. Detroit won its sixth straight game overall and completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, as Victor Martinez hit a two-run home run in the Tigers 6-2 triumph. Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Ian Kinsler was 4-for-5 with two runs scored for Detroit, which is in the midst of its longest road winning streak since capturing the first 17 away from home back in 1984. "Miggy and Victor have been hitting well all season long," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. Anibal Sanchez (1-2) returned from a stint on the disabled list to pick up his first win of the season as he gave up two runs -- one earned -- on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over five innings. Getting the call for the Tigers on Monday will be lefty Drew Smyly, who is 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA. Smyly did not get a decision on Tuesday in Baltimore, but he pitched well, as he allowed just a run and five hits in six innings of his teams 4-1 win. Smyly has faced the Indians 11 times, but this will only be his second start against them. He is 1-1 in those appearances with a 5.09 ERA. Cleveland, meanwhile, will counter with rightty Corey Kluber, who has won his last two starts.dddddddddddd Kluber was supported with 15 runs on Wednesday in Toronto, as he surrendered a pair of runs and four hits in seven innings. He also struck out nine batters and improved to 4-3 to go along with a 3.38 ERA. Kluber is just 1-3 with a 5.50 ERA in seven games (6 starts). "Everybody here is aware of the fact that [the Tigers] are playing well," said Kluber. "But it doesnt do us any good to compare ourselves to them, at this point." As hot as Detroit is at the moment, Cleveland enters this series at the other end of the spectrum and has dropped four in a row after a 13-3 shellacking at the hands of the Oakland Athletics on Sunday. Justin Masterson (2-3) surrendered a season-high seven runs on seven hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings to absorb his second straight loss. "Command was obviously his biggest issue. He had five walks and couldnt locate his breaking ball," said Indians manager Terry Francona. Michael Bourn and Michael Brantley each recorded solo homers for the Indians, who have dropped six of their last eight games. Cleveland was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base. Detroit split a two-game series with the Tribe earlier in the year, but has won 15 of the last 18 matchups. The Tigers were also 9-1 a year ago at Progressive Field. ' ' '

Sweden made the first step in its title defence
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 09-09-2019, 12:57 PM - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

MINSK, Belarus -- Defending champion Sweden made the first step in its title defence with a 3-0 victory over Denmark at the ice hockey world championship on Saturday. Calgary Flames forward Mikael Backlund scored twice in the opening period when the Swedes displayed fast, well organized play that was tough for Denmark to match. "It was nice to have a few goals right away, keep the pressure off and the nerves away," Backlund said. Another Scandinavian superpower, Finland, began its campaign with an upset 3-2 loss to Latvia and Norway blanked Italy 3-0 while Germany prevailed in a shootout to beat Kazakhstan 2-1. Backlund scored his first for Sweden when defenceman Markus Lauridsen deflected his shot to the net with his skate and struck again by precisely directing Joakim Lindstroms slap shot. Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist added the third on a solo effort after intercepting a pass. "Once we got up two to nothing we stopped taking the puck to the net," Nyquist said. "We tried to make too many passes instead of shooting the puck." Latvia failed to capitalize on its second-period power plays when a total of seven Finns were in the penalty box. Finland used its only power play in that period to go 2-1 up with a goal by Petri Kontiola. Kristaps Sotnieks tied the match for Latvia -- the quarterfinalist in the Sochi Winter Olympics -- in the third before Arturs Kulda netted the winner on a power play. It was the first victory for Latvia over Finland at the worlds. Thomas Oppenheimer scored the decisive goal in the shootout to give Germany the win. Germany outshot its opponent 47-20 but Kazakhstan went ahead 1-0 after a goal from Andrei Gavrilin. The Germans answered through Matthias Plachta at the end of the first period. "I have to look at the positive," German coach Pat Cortina said. "We put the puck to the net and that is extremely important for our team." Niklas Roest opened the scoring in the first period for Norway, Morten Ask made it 2-0 midway through the game and captain Anders Bastiansen rounded off the victory on a breakaway in the third. "I tried to shoot early to surprise the goalie and it went in, so I was really happy," Bastiansen said. "We did a good job. We won and thats the most important thing." Goaltender Lars Haugen made 15 saves for the shutout, but needed help from his posts on two shots by defenceman Daniel Sullivan in the second. "We had a little difficulty in the beginning, adjusting to the speed," Italy coach Tom Pokel said. "However, as the game went on we got better and better. So it was a good game for us." Italy and Kazakhstan are both newcomers to the top division this year. Later Saturday, Canada hopes to rebound from Fridays 3-2 loss to France with a win against Slovakia, while the United States faces Switzerland a day after it routed host Belarus 6-1. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Chris Carter hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high five runs, and Brad Peacock didnt allow an earned run while pitching into the seventh inning of the Houston Astros 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night. Robbie Grossman drove in a run and scored during a three-run fifth for the major league-worst Astros (40-81), who have won three of four for the first time since June 18. Peacock (2-4) earned his first victory since April 10 after two hard-luck losses following his return to the rotation. The rookie yielded four hits and two unearned runs, striking out five. Hank Conger drove in a run during his first multihit game since June 30 for the foundering Angels. Theyve lost 15 of 21, including five straight at home. Grant Green got the first run-scoring hit of his major league career for the Angels, but Jerome Williams (5-9) extended his skid to 11 straight winless starts to open this matchup of the AL Wests bottom two teams. After a sacrifice fly in the fifth and a run-scoring single in the seventh, Carter connected for his 23rd homer in the ninth. Matt Dominguez followed with a solo shot off Joe Blanton for the Astros fourth back-to-back homers this season. That was more than enough to protect a win for Peacock, who has allowed four earned runs in 19 1-3 innings over three starts since returning from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Houston has won six of eight at the Big A during its first season in the AL West, even sweeping a four-game series in early June. The Astros hadnt won another road series until earlier this week, when they took two of three in Oakland. Williams, 0-7 during his winless skid, yielded five hits and four walks before getting chased in the fifth by Jason Castros bases-loaded walk. Mike Trout reached base in his 38th straight game, extending the second-longest streak in Angels history. The All-Star outfielder also reached over the left-field fence to steal a homer from Brandon Barnes in the second inning. After four scoreless innings in which Williams had to work much harder than Peacock, Houston finally scored on three straight hits to open the fifth, with Grossman driving in L.J. Hoes. Jose Altuve and Castro then drew walks during difficult plate appearances, with Castro forcing in a run on Williams 99th pitch. After Carter singled home Brett Wallace in the seventh for Houston, the Angels chased Peacock with three straight hits, including Greens RBI single with one out. Green, the Anaheim native acquired in a recent trade with Oakland, has been batting over .400 with the Angels, but hadnt driven in a run. Reliever Josh Zeid escaped a seventh-inning jam by getting Peter Bourjos to ground into a double play, and Kevin Chapman got a popup from Josh Hamilton with a runner on to end the eighth. Hamilton went 0 for 4, returning to his miserable home form after the $125 million slugger went 11 for 29 over the past week. Angels right-hander Kevin Jepsen left the mound in the seventh after Dominguezs liner hit him in the pitching hand, leaving a bruise. Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton had an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday for an incident with Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Brooks Orpik last Saturday at TD Garden. The Department of Player Safety tweeted on Friday that the league will announce its decision on Saturday. Thornton was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for any suspension that can exceed five games. At 11:06 of the first period in Saturdays contest, Thornton confronted Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik in a scrum, pulling him to the ice and throwing punches. Orpik was removed from the ice on a stretcher. Thornton was assessed a match penalty on the play. Orpik was taken to a local hospital, where he was alert and conscious and later travelled back to Pittsburgh with the team. Custom Belgium Soccer Jerseys . She is one of the highest profile Kenyan athletes to fail a doping test.In a separate interview with the AP, World Anti-Doping Agency president Craig Reedie pointed to the example of Jamaica, which bolstered its anti-doping program under outside pressure and with outside help following concerns that it wasnt sufficiently testing its world-class sprinters. The world will expect Kenya to do more, in the way that the world expected Jamaica to do more, Reedie said. There are many people who have infiltrated our camps.Wario said the countrys new anti-doping agency will have teeth to deal with sports federations that do not co-operate with us, singling out Kenyas athletics federation. They havent been as co-operative as we would have liked them to be, Wario said. The minister said the government is investing $50,000 in the agency, which will get training and expertise from the anti-doping agencies of China and Norway. Samples from doping tests will still be sent to South Africa for analysis, as they are now.We are taking baby steps but I think we are heading in the right direction, Wario said. We have a very clear roadmap.Reedie said he wrote to Kenyan authorities three weeks ago pointing out to them that this situation should not be allowed to continue. He also noted that Kenyas report on doping appears so far to have been followed by relatively little action. They have time to pull this together, Reedie said. I would want to see speedy reaction to the report and to see progress. ' ' '

Vaughn was asked about his teams noticeable
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 09-09-2019, 12:43 PM - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

ORLANDO, Fla. -- When Magic coach Jacque Vaughn was asked about his teams noticeable win discrepancy this season in games at home versus on the road, he likened their home floor to feeling like a "fluffed pillow" for his young team. It found that warm embrace again, this time at the expense of a team fighting for its playoff positioning. Tobias Harris had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Orlando beat the Portland Trail Blazers 95-85 on Tuesday night to stop a nine-game losing streak. Nik Vucevic added 22 points and 10 boards for the Magic, who led by just eight at the half but used scoring spurts in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away. Victor Oladipo had 13 points and six assists. Orlando improved to 16-18 at home, compared to 4-34 on the road. "When you play on the road its a lot different," Harris said. "Their crowd gives them energy just like our crowd does. We know we have to get better on the road, but were playing good at home and tonight was a good win for us." The Magic earned their fifth victory against a Western Conference team, but just their third over one that entered the night in position to make the playoffs. Orlando previously posted wins against the Clippers and Thunder in the Amway Center. The Magic also matched their win total for all of last season with nine games remaining. "I was really pleased with the mental focus that we had from the beginning of the game, to come out and not use being on the West Coast as an excuse," Vaughn said. "It was impressive to hold that team to 85 points." Robin Lopez led Portland with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The Blazers, who entered the night in fifth place in the West, have lost three straight. They were without forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who missed his seventh consecutive game with a lower back contusion. After getting blown out at Charlotte on Saturday, the Blazers rebounded and showed lots of fight in nearly upending defending champion Miami on Monday night. They didnt seem to have anything left at times against Orlando, which went right at Portlands front line. The Magic outscored the Blazers 46-44 in the paint. Portland coach Terry Stotts said before the game that the tight playoff race in the West dictated a need to "accumulate wins where we can get them." He acknowledged afterward that they missed one of those opportunities against the Magic. "This is a very, extremely disappointing loss and in fact it was a game we needed to have," Stotts said. "Weve got 10 games left. Theres got to be a sense of urgency every game. Playoff race is tight. Wed like to look forward, but weve got four teams that are right on our heels, and every game has a new sense of urgency." The Magic closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run and increased their lead to 19 in the opening minutes of the fourth. Harris was the most active player for Orlando in the final quarter, scoring eight points. The Blazers were finally able to string together some baskets and cut the lead down to 11 points on a 3-pointer by Wesley Matthews with 2:31 to play. But the Magic were able to close out the game from the foul line. Orlando took an eight-point lead into halftime after shooting 50 per cent from the field in the first half. Vucevic led the scoring effort with 14 points. The Magic also had 10 assists on their 21 baskets, including four from Oladipo. Lopez scored 10 first-half points for Portland, which shot just 40 per cent from the field. The Blazers also struggled from the foul line, connecting on only 2 of their 12 attempts. The victory aside, Vaughn said there wont be any heavy focus on wins or losses for his team the rest of the way. "Have not mentioned one time what our record is to the team," he said. "What I do mention to those guys, and (will) when we practice on Thursday, is lets come to work and get better. Thats how well continue to judge each other and continue to push each other." NOTES: Orlando improved to 5-24 against the Western Conference. ... CHICAGO - Derrick Rose said everything he wanted to say about his health on the court.Rose had 24 points and seven assists in his return to the lineup, and the balanced Chicago Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons 102-91 on Monday night. In the first half, I thought he set the tone for us, coach Tom Thibodeau said. And certainly the way he finished was great.Rose was 9 for 20 from the field in a season-high 32 minutes after being sidelined by sprained ankles. The 2011 NBA MVP had missed four of the previous five games after he was injured in a 114-108 overtime loss to Cleveland on Oct. 31.Rose departed before the media was allowed in the locker room, leaving his teammates to discuss his best performance of the young season. He was confident out there and he was just playing his style of basketball, which was good for us because hes so fast and hes getting out in transition, getting guys layups and dunks, said Jimmy Butler, who finished with 19 points. Then hes stepping up and making big shots. Its always a plus to have him on your team.Pau Gasol had 17 points and 15 rebounds for Chicago, and Joakim Noah finished with 13 points, 14 boards and six assists. The Bulls outrebounded the Pistons 49-46 after they had lost the battle on the glass in the previous six games, rankling the hard-nosed Thibodeau.Josh Smith had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Detroit, which was coming off a 97-96 home loss to Utah on Sunday. Greg Monroe had 16 points and 10 boards, and reserve D.J. Augustin scored 16.The second half was a positive for us by and large, Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said. But when you give away the first half and then play better, but still come up short, I cant accept it. You have to play to win.Pistons centre Andre Drummond, who began the game in a jersey that had his name misspelled on the back, grabbed 12 rebounds, but was 0 for 5 from the field and finished with two points. The Pistons trailed by as many as 19, but Kyle Singler had a layup and Augustin made a long jumper to trim Chicagos lead to 90-88 with 2:43 remaining.Gasol responded with a clutch jumper and Smith missed a 3-pointer on the other end for Detroit. Rose then came down and found Butler for a 3, making it 95-88 with 1:56 left.Rose also hit a key jumper and two foul shots to help the Bulls hold on down the stretch.Detroit dropped the opener of a four-game trip to fall to 0-3 on the road this season. Brandon Jennings had 11 points and eight assists, but also committed four turnovers. Its the little things we have to get better at, Monroe said. We have to pay attention to details defensively.Rose had his best play of the night in the final seconds of the first half, when he faked a cross-court pass in midair, and then fired underneath to Noah for a layup. West scored 29 points Thursday night, the Pacers blew a 16-point second-half lead but pulled away late in a 93-80 win that ousted the Wizards in six games. "With all the adversity, we kept pulling together," West said. "Guys just showed unbelievable grit, unbelievable toughness." So, for all their mysterious slumps and chemistry curiosities, the Pacers are back where they were last season -- playing the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals. Game 1 against the two-time defending NBA champions is Sunday in Indianapolis. "We just keep a bubble," said Hibbert, whose off-and-on disappearing act was one of the more baffling late-season developments. "We dont try to let our emotions show too much. Sometimes it does. But we stuck together." Indiana took Miami to seven games a year ago. If the Pacers spread the wealth the way they did against the Wizards, LeBron James and the Heat could be in for a tough series. On Thursday, it was Wests turn. He went 13 for 26 from the field -- a career playoff-high in shot attempts. His pair of jumpers, including a tough fade-away, started a game-ending 20-6 run after Bradley Beals 3-pointer gave the Wizards a one-point lead with 8 1/2 minutes to play. "When David West has that look, when hes assertive and he demands the ball, I know were in good hands," said George, who was just 4 for 11 and scored 12 points. "Hes never failed us when hes given us that look and hes told us in the huddles, Get me the ball." Marcin Gortat scored 19 points, and John Wall had 12 points and nine assists for the Wizards, who ended their best playoff run in decades. Washington won a playoff series for the first time since 2005 and a second-round game for the first time since 1982. The Wizards were ultimately undone by an inability to win at home, going just 1-4 aat the Verizon Center and 5-1 on the road in the playoffs.dddddddddddd The future looks bright, however, with youngsters Wall and Beal manning the backcourt. "Nobody expected us to be here," Wall said. "I think a lot of teams respect us now. We definitely made Indiana earn it." They appeared to have a fix on the home-court demons when Beal stole a rebound from Hibbert, then hit the 3-pointer that put the Wizards up 74-73. But that was Washingtons only lead of the second half. The Wizards went five minutes without a point, including a span of three turnovers in four possessions, and scored only two field goals the rest of the way. "We spent so much energy trying to just make that comeback," Beal said, "we just ended up being dead at the end." The Pacers were 33-7 on Jan. 20 before limping to the finish, barely holding on to the conferences No. 1 seed. Things didnt look much better when they were pushed to seven games in the first round by eighth-seeded Atlanta, or when they lost Game 1 at home to the Wizards. Then after winning three in a row, there was the embarrassing Game 5, when Indy lost by 23 and was outrebound 62-23. "Nobody was happy about it," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "And they came out and played angry." The Wizards had to reschedule a Lady Gaga concert to host the game, upsetting the singers fans and prompting an apology from team owner Ted Leonsis. Instead of Little Monsters in the arena, there were big ones -- such as a 56-40 deficit early in the third quarter. But the Wizards answered with an 11-2 run capped by Walls 1-on-3 transition layup, Washingtons first fast-break basket. Wall was particularly assertive at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Pacers defence held firm when it mattered, with nary a sign of adversity. "Weve been through it all this season," said Lance Stephenson, who added 17 points. "And I feel like everything that we went through made us stronger." Notes: Wall expressed his support for coach Randy Wittman, whose contract is expiring. ...
