had to deal with a mental lapse by his defence
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 9 hours ago - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

CHICAGO -- Ian Kennedy has had enough problems getting run support from his offence. This time, he had to deal with a mental lapse by his defence. Kennedy struck out nine in six strong innings and Yonder Alonso hit a two-run homer to lead the San Diego Padres past the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Friday night. Cameron Maybin hit his first home run of the season in the third inning, but also had a mental lapse in the fourth. With one out and Conor Gillaspie on second, Alexei Ramirez hit a routine fly to Maybin in centre field. Maybin thought it was the third out of the inning. He put his head down and started jogging in. Gillaspie noticed that Maybin was unaware of how many outs there were and tagged up to third without a throw. One pitch later, Gillaspie scored on Kennedys wild pitch to tie it at 1. "You hate to see that," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Cam, when he came in, the first guy that he went to was to Ian and apologized. Cam doesnt make those mistakes." It wasnt the first time Kennedy had to overcome a position player forgetting how many outs there were. "Ive done it before on the mound so at that point, for me, Ive just got to get over it. My job was to keep that runner there. Yeah, but he came up to me and apologized to me," Kennedy said. "It was after he hit the home run and I said, Make it up to me, hit another home run, I will forget about it." Kennedy (4-6) allowed one run and four hits with three walks. The right-hander has struggled to get help from San Diegos offence. Before the game, he ranked 98th out of 101 qualified pitchers with 2.79 runs of support per nine innings. He struck out the side in the fifth and Gillaspie leading off the sixth. Alonso finished with three hits as the Padres ended Chicagos three-game winning streak. Padres closer Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 16 opportunities. Nick Vincent and Joaquin Benoit backed up Kennedy with a scoreless inning apiece. "In this day and age the bullpen is so important," Black said. "Our guys have been pretty solid all year, pretty consistent. We saw that again tonight. We feel good about our pen. Its a big part of our early-season victories." White Sox starter John Danks (3-5) followed an impressive outing against the Yankees with seven effective innings against the Padres. Danks allowed two runs and scattered eight hits. He struck out four and walked one. "I for the most part was able to get the kind of contact I wanted," Danks said. "Obviously, made some mistakes and got burned for them, but all in all it was a good day." Danks pitched eight shutout innings last Saturday but ended up with a no-decision in Chicagos loss to New York. White Sox starters have 2.21 ERA in their last 10 games. "Theyve come along," manager Robin Ventura said. "I think theyre getting stronger as we go along. Where were at right now, you stay with them and we have confidence when they go out there." Maybin led off the third with a home run on a 2-0 pitch from Danks. It was his first home run since June 9, 2013, at Colorado. Danks got help from second baseman Gordon Beckham. Everth Cabrera put down what appeared to be a perfectly placed bunt, but Beckham dove at the ball in the infield grass and swiped the ball with his glove to Adam Dunn at first for the out. Rene Rivera led off the fifth with a double to the warning track in centre and later scored on Danks wild pitch to give the Padres a 2-1 lead. "Its kind of odd that they score a run on a wild pitch and we score a run on a wild pitch," Kennedy said. "Its crazy how the game works like that. For the most part, its nice to get that in the next inning right away." Alonso added insurance runs in the eighth with a two-run drive off reliever Javy Guerra, his fourth homer of the season. NOTES: Kennedy struck out 12 against Miami on May 8. ... White Sox LHP Chris Sale (4-0, 1.73 ERA) will start Sunday instead of Monday, scuttling a potential marquee matchup against Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw (3-2, 3.57). ... Chicago DH-1B Paul Konerko, bothered by a stiff back since Tuesday, said he was available to pinch-hit. ... Ventura reiterated his support for RHP Ronald Belisario (3-0, 5.10) as the teams closer, saying there was no need to break in somebody else. Belisario has three saves in six chances. ... San Diego RHP Andrew Cashner (2-5, 2.35) threw all his pitches during a bullpen session and is expected to throw a simulated game Monday. Cashner has been on the disabled list, retroactive to May 15, with soreness in his right elbow. ... Black said LHP Robbie Erlin (3-4, 4.53) continues to rehab his sore left elbow in San Diego and there is no timetable for his return. Erlin is on the 15-day DL retroactive to May 18. Cheap Jerseys .   Watkins was the common thread early on the fi
Posted by: Bellroll33 - 9 hours ago - Forum: General Light Novels - No Replies

NEW YORK -- Clemson star receiver Sammy Watkins was the common thread early on the final day of the NFL draft Saturday. Watkins, the fourth overall selection in the first round by Buffalo, saw his older brother, Florida cornerback Jaylen Watkins, taken by Philadelphia to open the fourth round. Philadelphia acquired the selection the previous day from Houston, trading its third-round pick (No. 83) for the Texans fourth- and fifth-round spots. "Today is a very big day for our family," Jaylen said. "I texted him (Thursday) before he went on stage and he just texted me ... were both excited for each other. We cant complain about anything that happened this year for us." The next pick, by Washington, was Sammy Watkins college teammate, cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who went up against the nations top wideout in practice for several years at Clemson. Watkins fellow receiver with the Tigers, Martavis Bryant, also went in the fourth round, to Pittsburgh. "Sammy, hes a great player, hes like my brother," Bryant said. "I got a lot of love for him, so Ive never been the type to feel that (jealousy). Everything that the coaches asked me to do I did for the team, and if it was playing behind him then it was playing behind him." Andre Williams of Boston College, the nations leading rusher, went to the New York Giants, whose backfield has been plagued by injuries. Williams rushed for 2,177 yards and won the Doak Walker Award as Americas top running back in 2013, but he is considered a weak receiver. "Patience is a really valuable thing," Williams said. "It worked out the best possible way it could, no matter what round it ended up being." Arizonas KaDeem Carey, like Williams, an All-American runner, was taken four spots later by Chicago. Oregons DeAnthony Thomas went to Kansas City, ostensibly to replace departed Dexter McCluster. National champion Florida State had two players go in the first five picks Saturday: running back Devonta Freeman to Atlanta, and centre Bryan Stork, another All-American, to New England. Big 12 power Oklahoma, which was blanked in the first three rounds, broke through when the New York Jets drafted receiver Jalen Saunders. While two other powerhouse programs, Texas and Georgia, did not yet have anyone taken, Duke did. When Buffalo made cornerback Ross Cockrell the 109th overall selection, it was the highest a Blue Devil had gone since offensive lineman Lennie Friedman went to Denver in the second round in 1999. Cockrell thought Duke making the Chick-Fil-A bowl helped his stock. "I think it opened a lot of eyes that this guy from Duke can actually play a little ball and will be able to compete at the next level," he said. The first quarterback to go Saturday was a bit of surprise: inconsistent Logan Thomas of Virginia Tech. Thomas never really improved to the level expected during his career with the Hokies after a strong debut. Hes big, with a strong arm, but is turnover prone. Going on consecutive picks late in the fifth round were two other star QBs: Aaron Murray of Georgia to Kansas City, and A.J. McCarron of Alabama to Cincinnati. Zach Mettenberger of LSU went in the sixth round to the Titans. Missouri defensive end/linebacker Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to enter the draft, also is still waiting. T.J. INAWASHIRO, Japan -- Montreals Justine Dufour-Lapointe is getting used to sharing the podium with her siblings. Two weeks after winning gold in Sochi alongside her sister Chloe -- who won silver at the Games -- Justine again placed first in competition, this time at a moguls World Cup event on Saturday while her other sister, Maxime, placed third. "Its awesome. Im so proud of Maxime," the 19-year-old Justine Dufour-Lapointe said. "Shes achieved so many great things and she really improved her skiing this year. Everyone sees it now and its great. "Whichever sister is next to me, Im always proud and happy for them." Justine Dufour-Lapointe earned 23.41 points on the final run while Maxime took 22.67. American Heather McPhie placed second with 22.99 points. On the mens side, Marc-Antoine Gagnon of Terrebonne, Que., and Mikael Kingsbury of Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts, Que., won silver and bronze, respectively. American Bradley Wilson took gold while defending two-time Olympic champion Alex Bilodeau of Rosemere, Que., finished fourth. Maxime Dufour-Lapointe, who watched her sisters win Olympic medals while finishing 12th in Sochi, said shes cherishing this moment. "Its my first podium that I share with one of my sisters and hopefully there will be a lot more of these," the 25-year-old said. "I was so happy with my own run. My sisters do what they do and Im always happy for their success." The sisters stayed in Sochi to take in the rest of the Olympic festivities before travelling to Japan. They wont be back iin Canada until later this month for the national championships at the Apex Mountain Resort outside of Penticton, B.ddddddddddddC. Despite her busy schedule following the Olympics, however, Justine Dufour-Lapointe says she doesnt need any help to stay motivated. "Coming here to Japan I was a little bit tired and homesick, but when I get out on the course and see the crowd full of happy people, I have no choice but to enjoy it," she said. "I have this feeling of fun and happiness back after so many emotions (at the Olympic Games) and it felt good." Gagnon, who finished just off the Olympic podium in fourth place, secured silver with 24.25 points in the mens moguls. He scored high on a cork-1080, which he saved for his final jump. "The bottom there was tricky but Im really happy with my run," he said. Kingsbury earned 23.88 points en route to his third-place finish. Though he was first after qualification, he made a mistake on the landing of his 1080 which, he says, cost him some points. "At the end, its another podium and I feel good," Kingsbury said. The 21-year-old won silver in Sochi, behind Bilodeau. "It was one of my dreams just to be at the Olympics and get a medal, but I want to win the gold so thats my motivation," Kingsbury said. "I want to work hard, I want to be the best, I want to win as many (medals) as I can and be the greatest in the history of the sport. "I love the sport and even though I was on the podium at the Olympics, Im still hungry to win." ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Scott Sizemore is among nine players agreeing to minor league contracts with the Yankees, giving New York another option as Alex Rodriguezs replacement at third base. Sizemore, who turned 29 on Jan. 4, has been limited to six games over the past two seasons because of an injured left knee that twice required surgery. He originally got hurt on Feb. 25, 2012, during a fielding drill in Oaklands first full-squad spring training workout and had surgery that March 21 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Sizemore returned to hit .216 with six RBIs, a double and triple during 21 spring training games last year and was 0 for 6 last season when he got hurt again April 9 while chasing a bloop single by the Los Angeles Angels Mike Trout. INJURIES - Reds RF Jay Bruce is facing knee surgery for a torn meniscus and it could cost him a month of playing time. Chris Heisey, who has shown some pop (43 home runs, .DALLAS -- The Stars have their first win of 2014. Ryan Garbutt had a goal and two assists as Dallas snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. "Were pretty happy with that one," Garbutt said. "We got some tough breaks in the little slide here, and I think tonight we got some breaks and bounces." Jamie Benn scored a rare power-play goal for the Stars, who had not won since New Years Eve. They entered 29th in the NHL with the man advantage. Benn also assisted on the first goal of the game by Erik Cole, just 14 seconds in. Cody Eakin and Trevor Daley each had a goal and an assist for Dallas, which built a 4-1 lead 1:10 into the second period. "Not a good way to start the game," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "Going through the game in my end, it seemed like we made three mistakes and they ended up in our net and you cant recover." The final Stars goal came on Daleys shot into an empty net in the last minute. Justin Schultz and Sam Gagner scored for Edmonton, with Taylor Hall assisting on both goals. After the opening faceoff, Daley skated in from the left side, drawing goalie Ilya Bryzgalovs attention. Daley then passed across to Cole, who swept the puck into the open right side. Edmonton tied it at 3:20 when Hall passed to Schultz in the lower right circle. He skated across the front of the net and flipped the puck over Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen, who finished with 31 saves. Garbutts third goal in two home games against Edmonton gave the Stars a 2-1 lead at 8:35 of the first. "To get that goal right away was important," Stars coaach Lindy Ruff said.dddddddddddd "Obviously, if you sit right there at 1-1, a lot of things can happen." A pregame talk between Ruff and Garbutt seemed to help. "I had a conversation with him again about some plays in the previous game that I didnt like," Ruff said. "I thought Ryans play was excellent. Tonight might have been one of his best." Benns power-play goal followed less than 2 minutes later. Tyler Seguin passed from the top of the right circle to Benn on the left. His drive beat Bryzgalov. It was only the seventh goal at home with a man advantage in 81 opportunities for Dallas this season. Overall, the Stars entered with a 12.4 per cent success rate (20 for 161). "Tyler made a great play and (Benn) a great shot. Weve had that same look a few times and havent scored," Ruff said. "Hopefully, that leads to better times ahead for the power play." Dallas fourth goal came at 1:10 of the second by Eakin. Antoine Roussel sent a centring pass to Eakin from the right corner. The Oilers controlled play for most of the second period but came away only with Gagners goal. He got the puck in the crease after Lehtonen got tangled up with Daley. NOTES: Benns goal was his 16th, and third on the power play. ... Halls two assists gave him seven points (five goals, two assists) in the last six games. ... Dallas Ray Whitney played in his 1,300th NHL game. ... The last time the Stars lost seven in a row was in March 2009. ... Late in the game, Edmontons Ales Hemsky was hobbling on a swollen ankle. "The early X-ray doesnt show anything, but I think were going to have to delve a little deeper," Eakins said. ' ' '

The Canadian team captain who held the country spellbound as she scored three times against the powerhouse United States in the Olympic soccer semifinals, and then made an impassioned denunciation of some questionable refereeing, is to be honoured with a star on Canadas Walk of Fame. The 30-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., will be inducted during the Walk of Fame festival in Toronto on Saturday. The ceremony will be shown on Global TV on Oct. 27. "This is one thing that has definitely not sunk in," Sinclair said in a recent interview. "I cant imagine it. "You look at the people involved or who are inducted and I cant believe Im even associated with it." It is only the latest honour for the gifted striker, who took the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award as The Canadian Press female athlete of the year and won the Lou Marsh Award as Canadian athlete of 2012. She had been one of the worlds best female players for more than a decade, but it took her Olympic performance at Old Trafford, the famous home of Manchester United, to launch her to national stardom. Heavy underdogs to the Americans, Sinclair played perhaps the game of her career, scoring three times to give Canada a 3-2 lead. Then Norwegian referee Christina Pedersen made an almost unheard-of call against Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod for time-wasting, giving the U.S. a free kick inside the penalty area. Then came another dubious call of a penalty shot because the free kick hit a defenders arm from point blank. The Americans tied the game and then got the game winner in extra time. Canadian fans were outraged at what they felt was biased officiating, and Sinclair voiced their frustration in an emotional on-field TV interview after the match in which she said the team felt "cheated" out of a victory by the ref. Unfazed by the controversy, the Canadian team bounced back to beat France in the bronze medal game. Despite not winning gold, Sinclair was the easy choice to be Canadas flag-bearer at the Olympic closing ceremonies. She was later given a four-game suspension and fined an undisclosed amount by FIFA ffor "misconduct.ddddddddddddquot; More than a year later, the anger has subsided even if Sinclairs opinions havent changed. It was part of a highly intense, emotional match against the teams biggest rival. "I dont think the ref was the greatest ref we ever had, but at the end of the day, we gave up four goals in the semifinals of the Olympics," she said. "Youre not going to win very often doing that." The extent to which Sinclairs and the teams performance at the Games had grabbed national attention came the first time the national womens team played at home after the Games. A crowd of 22,450 -- a record for BMO Field in Toronto -- turned out for the rematch with the No. 1 ranked Americans in a so-called friendly match in June. Although the U.S. won 3-0, fans counted out the seconds each time the American goalie held the ball and generally let both teams know that nothing was forgotten. "That was incredible," said Sinclair. "The result wasnt what we wanted, but you could tell something bigger was going on. "The fans were into it. When I was growing up, you didnt know there was a womens national team. Now girls grow up dreaming of playing for Canada." The team is hoping to ride that emotion into 2015, when Canada will play host to the womens World Cup. Sinclair is by far Canadas most prolific scorer, with 145 career international goals. That ranks third all-time behind Americans Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm. When not playing for the national team, Sinclair plays pro soccer. She won a championship with Western New York in the defunct Womens Professional League in 2001, but moved to the Portland Thorns for the Inaugural National Womens Soccer League season this year. She scored a goal as Portland won 2-0 in the league final on Aug. 31. Sinclair went to University in Portland and now considers it home. "I never really left," she said. "Ive had to play in different parts of North America, but this was always home." But now she will be honoured once again in her home country. The Walk of Fame recognizes Canadians from all areas of the entertainment business. Other inductees this year are Terry Fox, Oscar Peterson, Alan Thicke, Bob Ezrin and Craig and Marc Kielsburger. ARLINGTON, Va. - Minnesota Duluth centre Caleb Herbert signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals. The team announced the deal Friday. The 22-year-old Herbert was a fifth-round draft pick in 2010. He spent the past three seasons in college at Minnesota Duluth, leading the team with 31 points and 85 penalty minutes this season. Herbert will go to Hershey of the American Hockey League. Lou Brock Jersey . The accusation by Kim Myers provided a bizarre twist during the trial of the world-famous double-amputee Olympian, who is facing 25 years to life in prison if convicted of premeditated murder for shooting dead Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, at his home last year. Harrison Bader Cardinals Jersey . The 10-horse field of 3-year-old pacers will leave the starting gate at approximately 10:14pm et. MADRID, Spain -- Atletico Madrid will play crosstown rival Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey semifinals after coming from behind for a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, sending the visitors through 3-1 on aggregate. Bilbao had yet to be beaten in 12 games at its new San Mames Stadium, and it appeared set to turn around its 1-0 first-leg loss after Aritz Aduriz scored in the 42nd minute. But as steady rain continued to fall, defending champion Atletico resisted Bilbaos push until Raul Garcia beat goalkeeper Iago Herrerin on a second try in the 54th. Diego Costa scored on the break with four minutes to play to seal a rematch of last years final, when Atletico ended a 14-year winless run against Madrid by winning 2-1 in extra time. "At halftime we talked about being a team made of men," Garcia said. "We had to step up when things were at their worst, and thats what happened." Also, Alexis Sanchez scored twice to help Barcelona rout Levante 5-1 at home and advance 9-2 over two legs. The Catalan club will play either Real Sociedad or third-tier Racing Santander next. Andres Iniesta returned after missing four games for Barcelona. Adriano, Carles Puyol, and Cesc Fabregas added to Alexiss double after Levante went ahead through Loukas Vyntras header that hit Barcelonas Sergio Roberto before going in. The marquee matchup of the quarterfinal round between the defending champion and Bilbao, a 23-time winner, lived up to its billing as the two sides offered a flowing, upp-tempo match from start to finish.dddddddddddd. And given the chances created by both sides, the final score would have been larger if it hadnt been for the superb performances by both goalkeepers. "Thats because we played against a great team," Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. "Football is passion and here (in Bilbao) you can experience football in its purest form. Its incredible how the team feeds off the atmosphere." Diego Costa had the first opportunity 30 seconds into the game, but keeper Iago Herrerin denied him one-on-one. The visitors lost left back Filipe Luis to a leg injury in the 12th, but didnt miss him until the final minutes of the first half when the intense contest swung in Bilbaos favour. After Bilbaos Mikel Rico and Atleticos Garcia had both sent shots inches from the post, Aduriz rose above Diego Godin to head Mikel Balenziagas cross off the turf and into the net. Bilbao pressed to extend its lead with the overall score now level at 1-1, and Atletico goalie Thibaut Courtois had to turn away another Aduriz header and Ricos volley before the respite of halftime. After he had stopped Diego Costa again, Herrerin used a reflex save to deflect Garcias shot, but Garcia was not to be denied seconds later when he whipped in Cristian Rodriguezs cross with a similar left-footed volley. Diego Costa finally bettered Herrerin when he had plenty of time and space to size him up and round him before scoring. The semifinals start next week. ' ' '

week with his bye; he may be entirely out of the

Marcus Mariota lost some ground last week with his bye; he may be entirely out of the Heisman Race after this week. After Mariota was pushed around by Stanford on Thursday, finishing 20/34 with 250 yards and two touchdowns in Oregons Title hope-crushing defeat, hes going to need a poor performance or two from the remaining frontrunners to have a shot at the most coveted individual trophy in college sports. The remaining frontrunners of course being Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston. While there is some considerable Heisman momentum in Winstons corner through 11 weeks, TSN.ca is sticking with Manziel as the lead dog. Manziel put up another monster performance in accounting for at least five touchdowns for the 10th time in his relatively short college career. The defending Heisman winners stat line cant be touched by any of the other contenders with just four weeks left until conference championships. He has 39 combined scores on the year, eight short of his 47 from last year. What keeps Winston in the race is Texas A&Ms two losses on the season, Manziels three interceptions against Mississippi State this week, and of course, Oregons loss putting Florida State in pole position to take on Alabama in the BCS National Championship. Two days after the Ducks saw their National Title hopes fade, Winston and the now second-ranked Florida State cruised by Wake Forest with 159 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Seminoles have three bird matchups to round out the regular season with Syracuse, Idaho, and a now very mediocre-looking Florida squad on rivalry weekend; a great stretch for Winston to catch up to Manziel in the stat lines. Someone else to keep your eye on is Baylor QB Bryce Petty. Lache Seastrunk had his name known in this column earlier this year but his teammate has passed him in the Heisman race of late. The Bears have continued to impress me all season and while Petty is still a fringe candidate through 11 weeks, what makes him a player to watch is Baylors remaining schedule. The fifth-ranked Bears still have huge games against Oklahoma State and Texas to decide the Big 12. If Petty continues to look good and Baylor finishes the year undefeated, thats two potential statement games that could go a long way come Heisman voting time. To go from Robert Griffin to Bryce Petty, its a good time to be a Baylor Bears fan. Brett Favre Falcons Jersey . Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist stood tall with 41 saves between the pipes, but it was defenceman Ryan McDonagh who got the first star of the game as he had a goal and an assist and now has two goals and four assists for six points in two games. Brett Favre Jersey . Under the deal, the Vikings will donate an undisclosed sum of money to five gay rights-related charities over the next five years. Kluwe said he wont receive any money as part of the settlement. "This will help a lot of people that really do need that help," Kluwe said. http://www.falconsrookiestore.com/Falcons-Deion-Sanders-Jersey/ . Alen, 28, hit .315 with five home runs, 59 RBI and a career-high nine stolen bases for the Goldeyes last season. He is the longest serving catcher in Goldeyes history, having already spent five seasons with the organization. Chris Lindstrom Falcons Jersey .A. Happ? Happs seven wins are second on the staff to Mark Buehrles 10. Win-loss record is an antiquated stat, sure, but win total is generally an indication of a pitchers ability to work deep into games, enough to be personally affected by the result. Steve Bartkowski Youth Jersey . Torres scored the first goal by an English team in the knockout phase of the Champions League this season when he met Cezar Azpilicuetas cutback in the ninth minute of their first leg match in the last 16. But Chelsea failed to make the most of its counterattacks and the Turkish champions equalized in the second half after gaining in confidence and cutting out their defensive mistakes.MUNICH, Germany -- The International Olympic Committee will contribute $250,000 toward a memorial for the victims of the attack on the Israeli team at the 1972 Munich Games. The Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reports the IOC, headed by the German Thomas Bach, pledged the contribution toward the $2.3 million project. The IOC confirmed the report when contacted by The Associated Press on Thursday. The German Olympic Sports Confederation has already pledged $27,000 for the project. Taxpayers will fund the rest. The resultss of a competition for a memorial will be revealed on Sept.dddddddddddd 19. Construction should be completed in the autumn of 2016. The memorial will commemorate the 11 Israeli athletes and officials who died in the attack by Palestinian militants on the Israeli delegation in the Olympic village and during a failed rescue attempt by German authorities at an airfield near Munich. The IOC has been criticized for not holding a minute of silence for the Israeli victims at the opening ceremony of recent games. ' ' '

NICOSIA, Cyprus -- It wasnt the result he wanted but John Herdman was pretty happy about how Canada finished the Cyprus Cup womens soccer tournament. Diana Matheson and Sophie Schmidt scored second-half goals as Canada rallied for a 2-1 win over Ireland to secure fifth place. It marked the first time in six years the Canadians hadnt reached the tournament final, but Herdman was encouraged by how his team dealt with that adversity. "The team showed a real resilience and that second-half performance was just phenomenal," he said. "This is a very unique group of women, when the chips are down they really can pull it out of the bag. "You think theyre out and then they come back and keep fighting but I thought the second half wasnt just about fight. They played just some wonderful football. The Irish were on the rocks for 45 minutes and we knew it was just a matter of time." Ireland opened the scoring early in the first half before Matheson tied it at the 56-minute mark. Schmidt highlighted a wild finish, scoring at the 90-minute mark. Canada, ranked seventh in the world, has traditionally fared well in this event. The national team won the tournament three times and was a finalist the last two years. But that streak ended with a 2-0 loss to England on Monday. And considering all the Canadians needed to advance was a draw, Herdman admitted the defeat was a bitter pill to swallow. "Absolutely," he said. "In previous tournaments we dodged the bullet of having England or France in our qualifying group and when we ended up (with England) in our group, we knew that was the game that was going to make the difference. "Getting the girls up for this one was tough because we were pretty devastated. But we tried to focus on this being a World Cup and just losing the final game in our group but still having qualified with another game to play and what strategies wed have to put in place to get things pulled around and in focus. It was a pretty good two days for our team." Despite the fifth-place finish, Herdman said the Canadian team learned many valuable lessons at the tournament. "We struggled, and Ill tell you why we did against the English and Irish defensive tactics," Herdman said. "The English held a really deep defensive block and hit us on the counter-attack, they just preyed on our sloppy play and within seconds were firing shots or crosses and I think that was the real learning this year. "Against a zone or 4-4-2 we did well, we did well against Italys 3-5-2 but against that deep 4-5-1 block, which is also what the Irish did, we struggled. But what was exciting about that last game was we were able to get hold of a tactic and the players really made a big push." The 2014 and 15 seasons are big ones for Canadian womens soccer. In August, the world under-20 tournament will be held in four cities -- Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal and Toronto. Then in 2015, Canada will host the womens World Cup with games in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Vancouver and Winnipeg. And following Canadas stirring bronze medal victory at the 2012 London Summer Games, there will be plenty of expectations on the national teams shoulders in 2015. That fact certainly isnt lost on Herdman, who said the squad has a definite plan in place. "Its always been said Canadians are great in the power phase, theyre good at defending and theyre good at the counter-attack," he said. "But the ability to control and develop possession through the thirds of the pitch, thats the strand thats been missing. "Weve put a massive amount of focus in that and at times it has been to our detriment. We couldve went into the England game and said, Look, well drop a deep block, well launch it from the keeper every time we get it because the only focus is about winning the tournament, but we didnt. We played our way." Herdman said playing their way meant a definite eye to the future and not just another solid Cyprus Cup showing. "If we were going to win the tournament, we were going to win it a certain way that would also help us be more successful against teams in the womens World Cup playing a brand these girls wanted to be recognized for," Herdman said. "Even after we went up 2-1 against the Irish, the girls were still doing things trying to play a certain style of football where normally youd try to kill a game off. "At this stage of our development I think thats OK but when it comes down to the World Cup, well be in a stage where we know how to play those games like we did at the Olympics." So for Herdman, his measurement for success at the Cyprus Cup goes way beyond wins and losses. "I think we definitely got better, our statistics were way better than theyve ever been," he said. "There are things we wanted to work on post-Olympics to get the team ready for 2015 and those have improved. "Its just now chemistry and understanding when we play our way how that fits against the models of other teams. Weve got a year-and-a-half to figure all that out and get the plans ready." Jacoby Ellsbury answered the call with a two-out homer in the 14th inning to give the Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night. Yankees manager Joe Girardi was grateful to come out on the winning end of a game that took 4 hours, 51 minutes and featured a second seventh-inning stretch before the Indians batted in the 14th. "Its much, much better," he said. "Thats a tough game to lose for either side because both bullpens did an exceptional job and it came down to one big hit." Ellsbury thought it might take a home run to win the game. He hit his sixth of the season on an 0-2 pitch from Vinnie Pestano (0-1). "Thats what it felt like, that it was going to take a home run to get a run across. But our bullpen pitched unbelievably to give us a chance to win that game," he said. "It was a nice team win." Chase Whitley (4-2) pitched two scoreless innings. David Robertson recorded his 22nd save, retiring All-Star Michael Brantley on a long fly ball to left with a runner on second to end the game. Before the game, New York placed rookie sensation Masahiro Tanaka, who leads the majors with 12 wins, on the 15-day disabled list due to right elbow inflammation. The All-Star had an MRI in New York on Wednesday. The injury list grew during batting practice when outfielder Carlos Beltran broke his nose when he was hit in the face by a ball that deflected off the batting cage. He had X-rays and a CT scan and will be re-evaluated Thursday. Mark Teixeira of the Yankees hit a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run blast in the fifth. New Yorks bullpen pitched scoreless ball over the final 7 1-3 innings. Nick Swisher had a two-run single in the first when Cleveland scored three runs. Marc Rzepczynski retired Kelly Johnson on a groundout in the 14th and was relieved by Pestano. Brendan Ryan flied out before Ellsbury delivered. "Vinnie got up 0-2 and tried to bury a breaking ball, but left it over the plate and that was the game," Indians manager Terry Francona said.dddddddddddd. Robertson retired Chris Dickerson to start the bottom of the inning before Jason Kipnis singled and stole second. After Asdrubal Cabrera struck out, Brantley lofted a popup into foul territory. Johnson, playing third base, tried to make the catch with his back to home plate, but the ball hit off his glove and fell to the ground. Brantley then sent a fly ball to left, but Zoilo Almonte, who was called up from Triple-A to replace Tanaka on the roster, made a running catch over his head in front of the warning track. Both teams squandered scoring chances in the 10th. Cody Allen struck out Ichiro Suzuki with two on to end the top of the inning. David Huff then walked the bases loaded with one out, but Shawn Kelley struck out Swisher and retired David Murphy on a groundout. Brandon McCarthy, acquired in a trade with Arizona on Sunday, allowed four runs in 6 1-3 innings in his Yankees debut. The first-inning runs were all unearned thanks to first baseman Teixeiras throwing error. McCarthy allowed nine hits, struck out three and walked one. "He did a good job," Girardi said. "He got a lot of ground balls. After the first inning, we had one miscue. He shut them down for most of the game after that. He gave us a really good performance." Josh Tomlin allowed four runs in seven innings for the Indians. The right-hander has given up 13 home runs in 77 innings. The Indians will present Derek Jeter with a gift before Thursdays game, the final regular season appearance in Cleveland for the 14-time All-Star. NOTES: Francona said RHP Zach McAllister, currently pitching at Triple-A Columbus, will start Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. McAllister is taking the rotation spot of RHP Justin Masterson (right knee inflammation). ... Masterson threw a bullpen session Wednesday. ... Beltran missed the first two games of the series with soreness behind his right knee. ... RHP David Phelps (3-4) starts for the Yankees against LHP T.J. House (1-2) in Thursdays series finale. ' ' '
